Based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, Thailand has maritime zone for 350,000 square meters, more than two-thirds of the land zone which is about 513,000 square meters. Thailand can be benefited from the sea not only that belongs to Thailand itself but also that belongs to foreign countries. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) divides maritime waters into 6 zones (Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, B.E. 2548 cited in Padermsak et al., B.E. 2550) including internal water, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone, continental shelf, and high sea.
